Reflexology is a relaxing complementary therapy, which helps to improve overall wellbeing. It works in much the same way for teenagers as it does for adults. With the added pressures teenagers face in their day-to-day lives, whether due to hormonal changes, the lead up to examinations or life changes such as a family breakup or bereavement then reflexology can be massively beneficial for their overall sense of wellness.
Stress in teenagers can present itself in the form of headaches, muscular and joint pain, acne, digestive disorders, disrupted and irregular sleeping patterns and behavioural issues to name just a few.
The office of National Statistics have looked at adolescents and reported that:
- 10% of teenagers are diagnosed with an emotional disorder
- Depression is more likely to occur if high levels of stress are present
- The number of teenagers on anti-depressants is increasing
‘Whilst the majority of our teenagers will not have mental health issues, it appears key that they begin to build coping strategies to help them manage their stress, which we can agree is a valuable lesson to learn in early life! Reflexology could be one such strategy. Reflexology can help them to sleep better, feel calmer and improve their sense of wellbeing’. (AOR)
Parents and carer’s can be shown some simple techniques they can use in between treatments in order to aid calmness and relax their child. At the end of the session you will be given a foot chart to help you and leaflets to give you added encouragement and support.
